The Seattle Kraken and Florida Panthers meet Tuesday night in Sunrise in a game that carries quiet but significant weight for both teams’ postseason chances.
Neither club currently holds a playoff spot, and with the regular season winding down, the margin for error has essentially disappeared.
Playoff picture pressure
Seattle (31-29-9) enters the matchup on a three-game losing streak, slipping in the Western Conference wild-card race at the worst possible time. The Kraken have dropped seven of their last nine and are now chasing multiple teams ahead of them.
Florida (34-32-3) faces a similar climb in the Eastern Conference. Despite hovering near .500, the Panthers remain on the outside looking in and likely need a near-flawless finish to stay relevant.
Seattle searching for answers
The Kraken have struggled to find consistency, particularly on the defensive end. They are allowing just over three goals per game and have had difficulty closing out tight contests during their current skid.
Offensively, Seattle continues to lean on its veteran-young core mix:
Jordan Eberle leads the team in scoring
Matty Beniers continues to develop into a top-line driver
Vince Dunn provides key production from the blue line
Goaltender Joey Daccord is expected to get the start and has posted a .901 save percentage this season, though he has faced heavy workloads behind an inconsistent defense.
Not that there is any added incentive needed with the playoffs on the line, but Larsson also collects his 1000th game tonight. Something only two other players from his draft class has achieved and milestone games are better remembered with a win.
Panthers dealing with major injuries
Florida’s season has been defined in large part by who isn’t in the lineup.
The Panthers are expected to be without several key contributors, including Aleksander Barkov and Sam Reinhart, while others continue to battle injuries. The absences have thinned out Florida’s top-six forward group and forced lineup adjustments across all four lines.
Despite that, Florida still has game-breaking ability:
Matthew Tkachuk remains the emotional and physical centerpiece
Sergei Bobrovsky, while inconsistent, is capable of stealing games
The challenge has been sustaining offensive pressure with a depleted roster.
Recent matchup
Seattle controlled the previous meeting between the teams, earning a 6–2 win earlier this month. The Kraken generated offense throughout the lineup and took advantage of defensive breakdowns by Florida.
That result could provide a blueprint heading into Tuesday’s game.
Key factors
Fast start - Seattle has struggled when trailing, making the opening period especially important.
Depth scoring - With injuries impacting Florida, secondary contributors will need to generate offense.
Goaltending - Both teams have allowed more than three goals per game this season. The better performance in net could decide the outcome.
Outlook
Florida enters as a slight home favorite, but the gap between the teams is minimal. Seattle’s recent head-to-head success and urgency could balance out home-ice advantage.
With both teams running out of time, expect a playoff-like atmosphere despite the standings
